Matthew 4:24 (NKJV)
Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.
Matthew 4:23 tells us that Jesus was very active in the region of Galilee. Not only was He “healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people” (NKJV), but He was also “teaching in their synagogues (and) preaching the gospel of the kingdom” (NKJV). But now His fame (which He never desired) has spread to a different region; Syria. Did He teach and preach there? Maybe. But one thing is very clear; Jesus healed everyone who was brought to Him. No one escaped His healing touch.
If you were among the sick during this time in Syria; one with a disease or illness, one who suffered with seizures or one who was unable to move your limbs, one who was demon-possessed or one tormented by some type of mental disorder, Jesus would have healed you. I can only imagine this would have also included conditions people had such as being deaf or blind. Why would it not? The opening verse says that “all” people who were brought to Jesus were healed; not a few, not some, not most, but all people!
Can this happen today? Absolutely! Why does it not? I suppose there are a myriad of reasons. Some could include our trust in other systems first such as medicines or endless doctors. There is nothing evil about either, but they are not Jesus. The woman with a flow of blood had Jesus as her last resort and she was healed (Mark 5:25-34, Luke 8:43-48). Another reason we do not receive healing is our lack of faith. Faith healed the blind man, Bartimaeus (Mark 10:52). However, we need to be cautious how we use this reason. If a person is blind their entire life this does not does necessarily mean they have a lack of faith! Perhaps faith, or a lack thereof, has nothing to do with it. It could be that God prolongs healing so the power of God may be on full display. Jairus’ daughter provides one example of this (Mark 5:21-23, 35-43).
May you be encouraged today. God understands everything about you as He created you (Ps. 139:14-16). Go to Him first for healing. Give your burdens to Him so you may find rest for your soul (Matt. 11:28-30). In His time, perhaps even in death, you will be healed (Rev. 21:4). Despite what the world may tell you, Jesus still heals. He still holds the title of the Great Physician!
