Philippians 4:12-13 (NIV)
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.  I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.

For as long as I can remember, Philippians 4:13 has been a verse that people memorize, see on a piece of art in someone’s home, or find on the outside of a coffee mug.  Indeed, we “can do everything through Him who gives (us) strength.”  I would suggest that if we focus on this verse without giving consideration to verse 12, then we have missed the mark.  

In Paul’s letter to the Philippians he writes, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Phil. 4:11).  Upon reviewing 2 Cor. 11:23-28, we discover that Paul had been faced with many challenges.  Some of these are listed below.  I encourage you to read this passage so you may explore additional challenges Paul encountered.
• imprisoned and flogged (v23)
• beaten with rods (v25)
• shipwrecked (v25)
• in danger from rivers and bandits (v26)
• sleepless nights, hungry, and thirsty (v27)

Through it all, Paul boasts about his weaknesses (2 Cor. 11:30).  When we are faced with valleys, and no two are alike, and your valley is different from mine, we learn things about ourselves that only the valley experience brings to the surface.  Praise God for the valleys!  We grow in them.  We mature.  Sadly for some, the valley may create distance from the Lord for prolonged periods of time.  

So, how do we conquer the valley?  Following Paul’s lead may be a great place to start.  What is the key to his peace?  Paul writes in Phil. 4:12, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.”  For you and I, despite our circumstances, being content is key.  For only then can we truly do everything through Him who gives (us) strength (Phil. 4:13).
